Frank Moore Cross: An Appreciation

Frank Moore Cross, a giant in the field of biblical studies and the ancient Near East, passed away at the age of 91 on October 17,2012. In a field rich with polymaths, Professor Cross stood at the pinnacle for his seminal scholarship, pedagogic devotion, professional leadership, personal warmth and humor, and intellectual accessibility. His ongoing influence on the scholarship of Israelite history, the Dead Sea Scrolls, literary forms, text criticism, Northwest Semitic paleography, orthography, and epigraphy, and typographical methodology attest to the brilliance of his analyses. It is with profound sadness that we mark the passing of our friend and colleague, Dr. David B. Weisberg, Professor of Bible and Semitic Languages at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Dr. Weisberg served HUC-JIR for forty-five years.

Beyond the HUC-JIR community, Dr. Weisberg was known for his important contributions to Assyriology, especially his publications of primary resources from the Neo-Babylonian period: Texts From the Time of Nebuchadnezzar (Yale Oriental Series; New Haven: Yale University Press, 1980), The Late Babylonian Texts of the Oriental Institute Collection (Bibliotheca Mesopotamica; Malibu: Undena Publications, 1991), and Neo-Babylonian Texts in the Oriental Institute Collection (Oriental Institute Publications; Chicago, Ill.: Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, 2003). Anson Rainey (z’l)

ASOR received the sad news that Prof. Anson F. Rainey (z’l), emeritus professor at Tel Aviv University, passed away today (Saturday, February 19, 2011). The funeral will be tomorrow (Sunday). The details were not immediately available.

Anson was a long-time, loyal ASOR member and one of the most accomplished scholars of Semitic languages in the history of our field. For me personally, he was a beloved teacher, adviser, and friend as well as a grandfather figure who cared deeply for my family and me. While his contributions to the field will live on for generations, he will be missed by many. An obituary will appear in a future ASOR publication, but we wanted to share this news immediately in the ASOR Blog.
